A FORMER North Wales man who first took an interest in films when his father was left hundreds of videos by a friend has been shortlisted for one of the industry's major awards.

Ed Bruce, a former pupil of Denbigh High School, has been nominated for one of this year's Emmy Awards which recognize the best in American primetime TV.

Ed, 44, is Special Effects Supervisor for the Dublin-based Screen Scene VFX company which has won numerous awards in recent years.

The latest listing is in the category for "Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode" and for his work on the HBO TV series "The Nevers".

Ed, whose parents Roger and Laraine still live in Trefnant, initially studied product design before moving to Ireland in 2000 and he became a VFX supervisor in 2007.

Since being with Screen Scene he has received a long list of accolades including multiple Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) and being nominated for a BAFTA.

Among the projects he has worked on are Game of Thrones, Ripper Street and the Robert de Niro film "The Irishman".

His latest nomination was, he said, a huge honour and a tribute to the work of the entire SSVFX team.

"We are all passionate about what we do and it's fantastic to see our work being appreciated by others," he said.

"I feel proud to be part of such a great team and this nomination is a recognition of everyone's hard work and love of our art."

Jake Walshe, president of SSVFX and chairman of VFX Ireland, commented: "This nomination is recognition of the hard work and dedication brought by Ed and his team in SSVFX for HBO on The Nevers, and it also shines a light on the level of creative talent now working within the Irish VFX industry."

The Emmy awards ceremony was due to be held in Los Angeles on September 18 but has been postponed because of the actors' strike.
