A WOMAN in her 70s from near Ruthin has represented Wales in a badminton tournament in Spain.

Sheila Palmer, 74, has lived in Pwllglas for nearly 40 years, and has returned from the mountainous Spanish city of Ronda, where she played for Wales in the Masters Nations Cup.

Playing in the “65 and over” age group, Sheila was one of five to represent North Wales in Wales’ 35-person squad.

“It was the first time that Wales has entered this competition, and it was an amazing experience.

“It has been an amazing year for me, becoming the Welsh mixed 65-and-over champion in April at the Welsh Masters Nationals in Cardiff with my partner, David Guy, as well as runner-up in the ladies’ 60-and-over with Sue Walters, and runner-up in the 60-and-over mixed with Dave Markey.”

Wales was one of 11 nations to take part in the tournament, as well as England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark.
