CORWEN 6

FC QUEENS PARK 0

HITTING regular opponents for six!

That was the tale of the weekend from the perspective of Corwen.

For the second week in a row, Danny Jellicoe's charges took on FC Queens Park.

This meeting came in the Wrexham Area League Premier Division Cup and after just a month-and-a-half of the campaign, it marked the fourth clash between the clubs this season.

As with the previous encounters in the league, NEWFA Challenge Cup and Welsh Trophy, it was Corwen who came out on top.

The home side made a bright start and they took the lead in the 10th minute.

Scott Evans played in Iorweth ‘Ioz’ Jones, who chipped keeper Adam Roberts for the opening goal.

Maintaining their purple patch, Corwen were two goals to the good in the 16th minute.

The ball was played over to Ryan Davidson, who smashed an effort across the box and into the far corner of the net.

Joe Williams went in search of Corwen’s third as he got into space and attempted the lift the ball over Roberts, however the keeper was able to gather.

At the other end of the pitch, Michael Latham was bearing down on goal, but a great tackle from Jak Newell prevented the Queens Park captain from getting a shot away.

Ten minutes from the break and Sam Henry beat the offside trap to get one-one-one with Roberts, but the Queens Park number one was able to pull off a save.

The home side's next chance came when Scott Evans floated a free kick into the box and Joe Williams headed the ball just wide of the target.

It was three-nil in Corwen's favour in the 41st minute.

A shot from Joe Williams struck the post, hit the keeper and went into the back of the net.

The dubious goals panel will be meeting to decide who to award the goal to, but they are unlikely to give it to Williams!

Corwen continued on the front foot when the second half got underway.

Sam Henry's cross was met by Ryan Billington, who headed narrowly over the crossbar.

The away side tried to get back into the game via a couple of free kicks.

The first one from Tony Jones sailed over the bar, while Latham had the next attempt, which went high and wide of the target.

The home side went close to making it 4-0 when Ioz Jones played the ball back to Sam Henry, who sent his close range effort wide of the post.

FC Queens Park’s Josh Betteley thought he was going to score as his powerful shot from distance had keeper Dylan Jones beaten, but the effort struck the post.

Turning to the 72nd minute and Corwen were awarded a penalty.

Sam Henry was handed the responsibility of taking it and he made no mistake from 12 yards to extend the lead.

Corwen were soon able to make it five-nil.

Substitute Eilir Edwards controlled the ball on his chest and played it on to Sam Henry, who got his second goal of the afternoon as he brilliantly found the bottom corner of the net with a powerful strike.

The visitors never threw in the towel and they were hunting for a consolation goal in the 86th minute.

Latham sent a free kick into the wall and he followed up by sending the ball narrowly wide of the goal from the rebound.

Corwen were awarded another penalty in the first minute of stoppage time.

Although Sam Henry was on a hat-trick, he allowed Joe Williams to take the spot kick and he made it a sparkling six for the home side by sending Roberts the wrong way from the spot kick.

In the quarter-finals, Corwen will play host to Mold Alex.
