AFTER the customary Denbigh Golf Club 'turkey trot', members got back to the cut-throat golf associated with the highly competitive winter league.

With relatively good weather for the time of year, the festive spell produced some excellent scores, with a number of new faces appearing at the top of the leaderboard.

The week nine winner was Gareth O'Loughlin with an excellent score of 42 points.

Eifion Lloyd Jones was just one point behind, maintaining his rich vein of form, while Ian Jones also carded an impressive 41 points.

These two members took first and second place in the bronze division.

The silver division was won by Lionel Davies on 39 points, with Darren Foulkes recording the same score but he lost out on a back nine countback.

Marc Shaw managed to maintain his position at the top of the league, but Darren Foulkes closed the gap to just two points.

Eifion Lloyd Jones found himself in third position after a series of good returns.

Week 10 saw 136 members participating and the competition was won with a tremendous score of 45 points by Wyn Jones.

In pursuit, Darren Foulkes and Osian Evans both scored 42 points, enough to win the silver and bronze divisions respectively.

Pris Jones and Alwyn Williams came second in the respective divisions, both carding a score of 41 points.

Over the festive spell, the competitive element of the winter league resulted in some phenomenal golf and it is impossible to predict the eventual winner.

Points are being consistently accumulated by the leading band and it seems that when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

This was evident at the top of the league, where Darren Foulkes is going to take a lot of stopping having secured a nine-point lead over his immediate adversaries.

Marc Shaw is leading the chase with 49 points, while David Jones quietly and consistently continues to establish himself as a serious contender having amassed 45 points.

Eifion Lloyd Jones and Andy McColl have got themselves into the mix with 43 and 42 points respectively.

Sixth spot is shared by Paul Mazurek and George Williams with 41 points.

If 2019 provides the same standard of golf then there is no doubt that the current competition will go to the wire and as many as 10 golfers are still in a position to pull off a spectacular victory.
