A JUNIOR football club in Denbighshire previously battered by floods avoided a similar scenario last week following the hard work and dedication of its volunteers.

In March 2019, Corwen FC Juniors’ Dee Park facilities were flooded out with damage including to a generator costing around £4,000.

The changing rooms and kitchen were also submerged following heavy rainfall, with club officials calling the effects of the storm “heartbreaking”.

As Storm Christoph arrived in the county last Wednesday (January 20), many at Corwen Juniors will have had concerns over whether or not they would be waking up the next day to find their facilities damaged once more.

But, this was not the case this time around, as the hard work of volunteers during last summer has paid off.

Soon after the floods of 2019 and following a fundraiser which collected £10,000, the club's cabins were raised further off the ground to allow any future flood water to pass underneath.

That, along with further works carried out by Corwen Juniors volunteers recently has 'saved' the club once more.

Corwen FC's Ian Evans, who was appointed the club's director of football last summer and is also heavily involved with the junior side, said: "Everything that could have been done, has been done at the junior ground.

"The work carried out in the summer of 2020 has been a huge success, the only issues we had this time were slight road damage and a septic tank came loose, but nothing to worry us about.

"We as a club are really proud of our volunteers who undoubtedly have saved the club this time around with all the efforts throughout the summer."

Corwen Juniors currently has more than one hundred young players on its books.

Their pitch, which also caters for a women's team, is separate to the first team's, who will play on their War Memorial Park ground in tier three when football resumes in future.

Corwen Juniors Football Club volunteers have also been renovating the Dee Park clubhouse lately. The club hopes to open these facilities to the public later in the year when it is safe to do so.
