THE joke wasn't on Denbigh Town on April Fools' Day!

Dewi Llion's side were at their rampant best to see off Llay Welfare 7-1 in a Friday night Ardal North West League showdown.

This was an ample spot of revenge for Denbigh, who were well beaten 5-1 at sixth-placed Llay earlier in the season.

Denbigh started the game with a high tempo and within the first eight minutes had three great chances.

Sam Jones volleyed straight at keeper Doyle, while Jake Walker also had a volley, but once again Doyle was able to save comfortably.

Soon after, Walker beat Doyle to a ball on the edge of the box but his curling shot was cleared off the line.

Denbigh’s pressure finally told on 10 minutes.

From a corner, Mike Sharples did the rest with a left-footed shot to make it 1-0.

After Sam Jones and Jacob Barratt had efforts that were just off target, Denbigh went 2-0 to the good via Barratt.

The hard-working Sam Jones got his reward on 32 minutes.

Billy Holmes turned defence into attack and sent a brilliant pass over the heads of the Llay defenders into the stride of Jones, who coolly rounded the keeper and slotted home for Town’s third goal

The second half continued with Denbigh in the ascendency.

On 48 minutes, Town they won a free kick just inside Llay’s half.

Sion Jones whipped in a vicious ball which Jake Walker connected with superbly to curl a volley into the back of the net.

Five minutes later and Walker had his second.

He broke free from a Llay corner and fed the ball to Jacob Barratt who beat the last man and shot only for Doyle to save and parry the ball into the path of Walker who fired home.

Llay did gain some joy when they won a corner.

An inswinger from Jared Taylor eluded everyone and flew into the far corner of the net.

Denbigh weren’t finished yet, though, and neither was Jake Walker.

With 84 minutes played he knocked in his hat-trick effort and Denbigh’s sixth of the night.

Harry Lea then created a chance for himself to get on the scoresheet as his electric pace saw him skin his defender and shoot low and hard to Doyle’s left hand side, only for the keeper to make a fine save.

It was Walker who had the final say of the evening when he notched in his fourth in the last minute.

Sion Jones sent in a cross form the right wing and there was Walker lurking in the six-yard box to fire home Denbigh’s magnificent seventh.
