IT has been a terrific start to the new competitive season for Bala Town.

Colin Caton's charges travelled to Cymru North Chirk AAA on Sunday for a second round tie in this season's Nathaniel MG Cup.

The Lakesiders took charge early on and they eventually ran out 6-1 winners to secure their spot in the third round.

As early as the first minute, ex-Welsh international Dave Edwards headed the visitors into the lead.

Soon afterwards and it 2-0 with Lassana Mendes on the scoresheet after being set up by Paul Rutherford.

With Bala remaining in the ascendancy, Ollie Shannon saw his shot striking the crossbar midway through the first half, however it was three-nil right on the stroke of half-time.

Dave Edwards found the target once again via a superb free kick.

The Lakesiders remained on the front foot in the second half and they extended their advantage through George Newell three minutes after the restart.

Luke Wall came off the bench and he was soon in the thick of the action, scoring goal number five after 63 minutes, with Lassana Mendes supplying the assist.

Chirk never threw in the towel and they were able to pull a goal back through Steffan Rogers midway through the second half.

The final word belonged to Bala, though, with Chris Venables grabbing his side's sixth goal with around five minutes left.

This sets Bala up nicely for the beginning of their Cymru Premier campaign.

On Sunday, Town will head south to take on Penybont in their first league game of the season.
