WREXHAM got their season off and running with victory over Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup first round tie at The STóK Cae Ras.

Beaten 5-3 by MK Dons in their opening League Two fixture on Saturday, Phil Parkinson rang the changes and the Reds produced a much better performance.

Unable to take their chances, the game finished goalless and went to a penalty shoot-out where Wrexham won 4-2 with Luke Young, Elliot Lee, Tom O'Connor and Sam Dalby all successful from the spot as Wigan missed twice.

Here's how the players rated.

MARK HOWARD: Didn’t put a hand or foot wrong and wasn’t needed in the shoot-out. 7

ANTHONY FORDE: Didn’t get as many crosses in as as he wanted but defended well. 7

MAX CLEWORTH: The young defender had a decent game at the back. 7

BEN TOZER: Picked up a knock in the first half but the defender doesn’t miss a minute of any game. 6

EOGHAN O’CONNELL: Wasn’t troubled at all and his passing was assured at the back. 7

CALLUM McFADZEAN: Had a great chance to score in the first half but put his effort over the bar. 6

LUKE YOUNG: Put in some quality corners in the first half and was busy in midfield and opened the scoring from the spot. 8

JAMES JONES: Had a much better game than he did on Saturday. Forced a good save out of Sam Tickle in the first half. 6

JORDAN DAVIES: Had a decent run-out in the middle of the park and was denied a certain goal by star man Tickle. 6

OLLIE PALMER: Worked very hard and was desperate to score, having shots for all areas of the pitch. 8

JAKE BICKERSTAFF: His overhead kick came close to giving Wrexham an early lead. His movement was also good, especially in the first half. 7

JACOB MENDY: Looked good when he came om as Reds’s first replacement. 6

TOM O’CONNOR: Cool penalty in the shoot-out. 6

ELLIOT LEE: Another who was spot on when he came on. 6

RYAN BARNETT: One of five second half substitutes. 6

SAM DALBY: Put the keeper the wrong way to score in shoot-out. 6
