RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1593 prime lambs to £152 / 371.8ppk; 46 prime hoggets to £122 / 188.2ppk and 671 ewes to £180.

Prime lambs (auctioneer - Rich Lloyd):

More lambs about on the day with an entry of 1,598.

In spec lambs for the festival a very good trade with medium lambs averaging 308.4ppk, but with abattoirs busy catering for those lambs, the remainder were harder to sell on the day with an overall average of 284.6ppk.

53kg at £152 by I Hughes, Four Crosses; 50.5kg at £152 by M H Owens, Glantre; 51kg at £150 by H M & I Ll Roberts, Waen Rhydd.

39kg at 371.8ppk by OL & SL Jones, Bron Parc; 42kg at 352ppk by Ifan Hughes, Four Crosses; 40kg at 350ppk by Ifan Hughes, Four Crosses.

Lights to 281.3ppk, av 243.5ppk; Standards to 371.8ppk, av 268.2ppk; Mediums to 352.4ppk, av 308.4ppk; Heavies to 317.4ppk, av 298.2ppk; Overs to 286.8ppk, av 273.9ppk.

It was the end of a very busy week at Ruthin with nearly 8,000 sheep sold.

A good Friday entry of 671 ewes.

Ewes in their wool much harder to sell - get shearing!

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of two bulls to 3800gns; 13 cows & calves to £1980; 19 heifers to £1320; 29 steers to £1455; 40 calves to £720; seven stirks to £880; six OTMs to £1780.80 / 258ppk; 255 store lambs to £111 and 98 store ewes to £184. 

Store cattle (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

A few less about on the day but the trade was as strong as ever!

A total of 16 heifers forward at the sale topping at £1320 for a 25 month Lim from G Lloyd & Son, Bryn Golau.

Some other prices:

18 month BB £1125; 24 month Lim £1305; 28 month AA £930; 23 month Blonde Aquatine £920; 18 month Her £900.

Overall average £1207.59.

A tally of 29 steers and some power about, topping at £1455 for a 21 month BB  from G W Pierce, Plas Dolben, with other consignments at £1435 and £1410.

Overall average £1145.63.

Top price went to R A Hughes, Henblas. A 92 month Lim weighing 840kg sold for £1780.80.

Meanwhile, top price per kilo went to Wern Vets Cyf for a 26 month AA (660kg) at 258ppk.

The prices say it all and there's still plenty of demand for bulls.

K I & E Jones, Bryn Ddraenen sold an 18 month Lim for 3800gns.

Haulfryn Farming, Spon Farm sold a 19 month Lim for 2950gns.

Cows & calves were on fire!

A special entry from Morris, Cader met a firm trade.

British Blue first calving heifers with young Lim calves at foot sold to £1980, £1950, £1820 and £1800 twice.

British Blue first calver with Lim calf at foot from Jones, Carreg Coediog sold to £1580.

Aged cows and calves to £1520.

Further cows and calves, and breeding bulls, entered already for this week.

Less numbers forward as farmers take advantage of the warm weather.

Top price went to D S Hughes a’i Gwmni, Ffrith Lom for a Lim male calf at £720.

Weanlings (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

Top price of £880 went to EP & A Rowlands, Ty Coch for a 9 month Simmental bullock.

14 month Sim bullock-£745; 10 month Lim heifer-£700; 9 month Lim heifer-£635.

More required on a weekly basis.

Store ewes (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

A consignment of 52 Texel x full mouthed ewes from OL & SL Jones, Bron Parc averaged £180.61.

There was a flying trade on sponging ewes.

Tal y Bont to £140; Strong Welsh to £94; Texel x hoggs £128.

Store lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A total of 255 store lambs forward to a flying trade.

There were a few vendors missing due to harvest commitments, so more expected week on week now.

Top price pen of 10 for the £50 voucher went to AC & M Jones, Carreg Coediog achieving £111 with the £20 voucher awarded to the purchaser, Rhydian Jones, Hafotty Ddu.

Second price was awarded to E&G Hughes, Bwchanan achieving £86 for sweet Texel cross lambs.

There was a magnificent show of 3340 lambs with an SQQ of 338ppk!

As expected, tup lambs were driving the demand but ewe lambs sold just as well with fewer of those about.

The market average weight on the day was just over 39.5kg with a per head market average of an incredible £132.40.

Some trade for those heavy / overweight tup lambs ranging from £160 to £178!
