RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 3,048 prime hoggets to £140 / 323.8ppk and 482 ewes to £170.

Prime hoggets (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A terrific entry of 3,048 hoggs forward on the day with a consistent trade from start to finish.

SQQ of 250.1ppk with a pleasing overall average of 244.4ppk.

A tally of 1,606 medium weight lambs keenly fought for at 252ppk.

Standards were sharper at 245ppk, with lights at 236ppk and over 730 heavy and overweight lambs held their own at 235ppk and the overs at 216ppk.

Standards (38kg) £110 by HJ & FJ Williams, Maes Gadfa.

Mediums (42kg) £136 by Harri Whittingham, Bron y Felin.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,222 prime hoggets to £135 / 284ppk; 285 ewes to £168 and 73 store pigs to £125.

Prime hoggets (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

An increased entry of hoggets on the day with 1,222 forward and a sharper trade.

SQQ on the day was 236.2ppk.

A better show of lambs with the lights much sharper and averaging 232.1ppk.

The best of the Welsh, a consignment of 33.5kg, to £80.

Top priced:

69kg at £135 by S J C Taylor, Accar Las.

62kg at £121 by G C Jones & Son, Wenallt.

44.5kg at £117 by D C Hancock, Smithy Farm.

Top priced per kilo:

40.5kg at 284ppk by D C Hancock, Smithy Farm.

44.5kg at 262.9ppk by D C Hancock, Smithy Farm.

40kg at 262.5ppk by R & E Williams & Son, Hendre.

Slightly less store pigs about as is the trend nationwide.

Less numbers resulted in a better trade in all classes.

Best of the weaners from £28 to £44. Best of the store gilts to £115.

Best of the store boars to £110.

Barren sows to £115.

Store cattle (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

A total of 285 store cattle forward on the day.

A continued excellent trade on all breeds and ages - big or small.

Meanwhile, a tally of 77 heifers forward with an overall average of £1095.39.

Top price of £1550 went to E A Davies & Co, Dolwerfyl selling a 24 month BB.

A total of 110 steers forward with an overall average of £1247.31.

Top price went to H Robert & Co, Plas Dinam selling a 51 month Lim cow weighing 720kg to £1944.

The same vendor also achieved a top price per kilo of 270ppk with the same beast.

Also achieving a top price per kilo of 270ppk was RG & GM Williams, Disgarth Ucha with a 25 month old Lim weighing 370kg.

The opening sale of the new calf ring and penning area was blessed with 183 calves, with a ring full of buyers from near and far.

A total of 25 buyers, which says it all.

Calves are required on a weekly basis.

Top price went to P & L Jones, Gables, selling a BB bull calf to £440.

Others:

BB bull calf to £415; BB heifer £350; Lim bull £375; Lim heifer £305; AA bull calf £340; AA heifer £250; Hereford bull to £300; BF bull to £135.

The highest priced male calf went to P & L Jones, Gables, with a BB at £440.

The highest priced heifer calf went to E W Hughes, Gwaenynog, for a BB at £350.

Both vendors will receive 20 straws of Ultraplus male sexed semen, kindly sponsored by Cogent.

The ballot for the free commission for the calf vendors was done before the sale with M & G & M Thomas, Carneddol being the lucky ones drawn out.

The next dairy sale will be on March 30.

The firm trade continues!

Plenty of demand for smaller and dairy bred types, no matter what age.

Top price went to G Davies, Penrallt, selling an 8 month Lim heifer to £1420.

Dairy bred:

A total of 651 store lambs forward on the day to a top price of £98 from Llion Jones, Foel Eryr.

Strongest ewe lambs from £75 to £85.

Romney ram lambs to £80; Texel ram lambs to £92; Texel ewe lambs to £84; Mule ram lambs to £90; Mule ewe lambs £65; Welsh ram lambs to £49; Welsh ewe lambs to £41; Cheviot ram lambs to £87; Suffolk ewe lambs to £85; Beltex ewe lambs to £89.

A smaller number forward on the day with more expected next week.

Welsh Mule yearlings scanned for twins to £118.

Welsh full mouth scanned for singles to £60.

Ewe & lamb couples (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

Another good entry of quality couples with once again stronger lambs selling to a premium.

Younger lambs were harder to sell.

Twins: Overall average £193.58 / £64.52 a life.
