RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 11 spring lambs to £142 / 316.3ppk; 2,564 prime hoggetts to £168 / 367.6ppk and 706 ewes to £250.

Spring lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A total of 11 new season lambs were forward on the day to an average of 301.1ppk.

37.5kg at £107 / 285.3ppk by A Handley & partners, Oaktree Farm.

45kg at £142 by S L Jones, Bryn Pin.

43kg at 316.3ppk by S L Jones, Bryn Pin.

43.5kg at £132 / 303.5ppk by I H Jones, Tain y Waen.

Prime hoggets (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A tally of 2,564 hoggs forward on the day and trade was stronger on the week again.

Some 1,995 hoggs in the SQQ of 256ppk overall average, with all in 251ppk or £106.

Improved demand through all weight catagories, but in particular the handy weights and well finished hoggs.

Standards (36kg) £136 by Ty Isa.

Mediums (42.5kg) £138 by Mrs F R Jones, Graig.

An uplift in trade resulted in a respectable overall average of £93.49 with strong meatier ewes selling at a premium.

All types required with buyers lining up for numbers.

Top price of £250 went to Gop Farm, Trelawnyd followed by £230, £220 and £210 from the same vendor, averaging £223 on the day.

Ruthin primestock sale - March 10

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 960 prime hoggets to £135 / 295.5ppk and 49 ewes to £144.

Prime hoggets (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

He who dared won on the day, with some brave farmers venturing out and they very well rewarded.

A very good show of hoggets despite the weather with a show of 964 prime hoggets forward and an SQQ of 246.1 and 245.5 overall.

Some real quality about on the day and an increase in number in the more sought after mediums compared to the usual Friday show.

Top priced:

46.5kg at £135 by A J E & C Thorley, Bark House Farm.

46kg at £130 by H W & S W Jones, Fferwd.

45.5 kg at £125 by A J E & C Thorely, Bark House Farm.

There were only 30 lights in the entry, average weight 29.8kg at 231.7ppk.

Standards av 235ppk; Mediums av 248.6ppk; Heavies ave 246.5ppk; Overs av 200ppk.

Ruthin store & breeding sale - March 9

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of two OTMs to £1267.20 / 192ppk; 45 heifers to £1430; 40 steers to £1,470; 23 stirks to £950; 39 calves to £380; 463 store lambs to £873; 15 ewe & lamb couples to £220 and 24 pet lambs to £22.

Store cattle (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

Fewer heads in the pens and around the ring on the day with the weather doing everyone no favours.

The trade, however, was still still unharmed.

A total of 110 forward and some prices as follows.

There were 45 heifers forward with an overall average of £973.

Top price of £1430 went to I A Jones, Ty Mawr selling a 22 month Blonde Aquatine.

Others:

19 month BB £1,260; 18 month Lim £1,200; 15 month Lim £1,100; 29 month Her £1,100; 12 month Lim £1,000; 13 month Char £1,000; 29 month Hereford £1,100; 21 month WB £750.

Steers went to an overall average of £1112.75
Top price of £1,470 went to Mrs C M Jones, Cae Isa selling a 23 month Saler.

Others:

23 month AA £1,275; 24 month BB £1,275; 16 month Lim £1,255; 18 month BB £1,250; 11 month Lim £1,150; 13 month Lim £1,120; 18 month Stabiliser £800.

Barren cattle (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

Top price went to A & A Thomas, Ty’n Hendre selling a 105 month Saler cow, weighing 660kg, to £1267.20, also achieving a top price per kilo of 192ppk.

43 month Lim-455kg-180ppk.

Overall average 187.1ppk / £1,043.10.

Calves (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

As expected, less numbers in all sections of stock at Ruthin on the day.

Calves continue to meet excellent prices.

Top price went to Coleg Cambria, selling a BB bull calf to £380.

Others:

BB heifer calf £330; Lim bull calf £350; Lim heifer calf £280; AA bull calf £300; HF bull calf £75.

The ballot for the purchasers of all calves the previous week was drawn before the sale with M Shone, Ynys Waelod being the lucky recipient of a £50 cash prize.

The next dairy sale is on March 30.

Weanlings (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

Trade on par to the previoys week, keep them coming!

Top price went to Alan & Anna Williams, Caenog selling a 9 month Lim heifer to £950.

Others:

10 month Lim bullock £835; 6 month Lim bullock £830; 10 month Charolais bullock £825; 12 month BB heifer £740.

Store lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

Still a respectable number of store lambs forward with 463 in total, despite the weather conditions.

These included 220 organic lambs from one place that resulted as follows.

Strongest Texel ram lambs to £78; Strongest Texel clean lambs to £87; Strongest Texel ewe lambs to £81; Strongest Welsh ram lambs to £74.50; Strongest Welsh ewe lambs to £47; Suffolk ram lambs to £756.

Overall average £63.22.

Ewe & lamb couples (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

A seasonal entry in the sheep section due to the bad weather, but still a good trade on the couples, although not many were forward.

Twins:

Crossbred to £220; Mule to £200; Texel to £188.

Twins: Overall average £198.25 / £66.08 a life.

Singles:

Welsh to £90.

Singles: Overall average £87.82 / £43.90 a life.

Overall average £117.27.

Pet lambs (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

Pet lambs ranged from £4 to £22.
