A MAYOR celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary made a sweet tribute to her husband saying it has been a "wonderful ride".

Councillor Anne Roberts, mayor of Ruthin, and her husband George marked their Diamond Anniversary on February 15.

The couple, who have two sons and two grandchildren, were "thrilled" to receive a card from King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen (formerly HRH The Duchess of Cornwall) on their special day.

Mrs Roberts, who met George in August 1962 on the square in Ruthin on flower show day, said: "We have both always lived in Ruthin and still do, but we had never met until then.

"We married on February 15 1964 at Ruthin Registry Office with family and close friends joining us at the Wynnstay Hotel for the reception."

George was previously a painter and decorator. He dedicated a lot of his free time to Ruthin Football Club as a committee member.

"We had two boys who were into sports," Mrs Roberts said.

"We spent years taking them to cricket matches all over the country, which we enjoyed.

"George became a postie during this time and loved his regular rural round and become friends with a lot of the farming community.

"He was always outgoing and a people person. I went to work for North Wales Police (NWP) in 1988 and worked for them until my retirement in 2010.

"The last few years with NWP, I acted as Unison Branch secretary and this gave me an interest in politics. George was always supportive but never got involved in that side of my life.

"He came with me to Buckingham Palace in 2010 when I was awarded the MBE for services to NWP. He was so proud."

Mrs Roberts said the couple have "many blessings".

"We have two lovely grandchildren, Matt and Victoria," she said.

"We had a lovely card from the King and Queen on our anniversary and were thrilled with that. We spent the day quietly at home as George isn't too well but nevertheless, it was a nice day.

"You have to work at marriage, give and take, ride the storms out together.

"It might sound corny but in our case, it's been a wonderful ride with some wonderful memories made."
